Exterior warning signs
- White chalky staining (efflorescence) — water is moving through the masonry
- Spalling: brick faces flaking or popping off
- Crumbling or missing mortar joints
- A cracked or sloped concrete crown
- Rusted or missing chimney cap
- Damaged flashing where the chimney meets the roof
Interior warning signs
- Water stains on the ceiling or wall beside the fireplace
- Rust on the damper or firebox
- Masonry debris in the firebox
